Staff writer Marty Myers sat down with Athlete of the Week Terry Hurst from Abington Heights. Here’s a little more from the conversation:
Golf’s so fickle, and things didn’t go well at team districts the Friday before. I went out and hit balls until my hands bled. I knew it was more not for me individually, but because I knew I was going to have to play well for the team. I just couldn’t handle putting up a number that big with all the guys watching me. I love our team and all the guys. I’d rather all of us win a state championship. I think that’s the goal we are all working toward.
How happy was your dad after your win? He was ecstatic. He was the second person I hugged after I won. The first was my mom.
What are your expectations for regionals on Tuesday? The hardest step was to get out of our district. There are 24 out of 50 that make it states, so if I can just throw a decent number up there, I like my odds.
Are you ready for that? I’ve acknowledged this feeling of how it feels to play and how to get in the swing plane I’m in. I think I’m ready. I think I’m prepared.
Are you mentally ready to take the next step, because it’s not easy to acknowledge you are now at an elite level in our district? It’s hard at this age, but I’m still trying. This is the most humbling game out there and it’s important to keep a good head on your shoulders and make sure you are always focused toward that goal of getting better.
